Our History in Houston, TX

text decor greeeeen
As with most historical tales, this one has its share of twists and turns including how a barbecue joint with deep African American roots wound up with an Italian name. It all started back in 1935 when the husband and wife team, John and Leila Davis, opened their modest BBQ restaurant called Shepherd Drive BBQ.

Got the chopped beef poboy with end cuts (bark). One of the best bbq sandwiches I’ve ever eaten. Smokey, and not too much fat. I just wish I lived or worked closer so I could stop in more often. Can’t wait to try the ribs next time.

Stopped by for some BBQ to go. Excellent food. I was in search of a BBQ place near the heights that was more like the ones I remember as a kid - no reservations or white table cloths, just awesome food!

Went for dinner with my daughter last night. We both wanted pork ribs so I ordered an extra starter of those, knowing in advance we would take some home for later. Yum! I also ordered brisket, specifically requesting end cut because I love the bark. We were not disappointed! The food was all... excellent including the sides. We tried the cabbage, Mac n cheese, and corn. And of course Sunbeam bread, jalapenos, pickles, and onion. Everything was absolutely wonderful. Didn't need any sauce but I tried a little and it is very good. If you like sauce with your 'que I recommend it.The service was impeccable, and puts Pizzitola's head and shoulders above some other restaurants on that criteria alone. I highly recommend giving this long-established Houston institution a try the next time you want BBQ.read more

We ordered to go. I had the chef salad. It was very good. Brisket was very tender and good tasting. The turkey was a bit dry but very good as well. My daughter order the brisket dinner but they didn't give her any bbq sauce - don't forget to ask for it if you're getting a to go order.

Service for takeout was great. Because of train derailment I was the only person in the building. Ribs tasted as if they had been held too long. Sausage were on par.

EXCELLENT! Just went and tried the updated menu 3/2/2021. Really blown away on how good it was. Incredible service. Moist towels at the end really add to the experience. Fridays they do a Poboy that is all dang good. Seasoning is on point on all their meats.

We stopped by for brunch and it was delicious. The waitress was very nice and I believe the owner came out to all the tables to ask how everything was. I thought was pretty neat. Definitely coming back and telling friends about it.

The food is great, I really liked the smoked cabbage, ribs, and brisket. I didn't try the chicken but it looked great. The "Prices" are very reasonable and their food has history. Everyone that works here, tells the recipes history as if they're telling you the history of their lineage.The... founder love baseball so much he would close down every year to go to the world series. They have an interesting story about the baseball bat that hands on the well. It shows the time period and the stresses that people had at the time. It tells about how the owner didn't trust banks, and why should he. They had just tried to take everyone's money which was part of the great depression. If you want non-commercial, real food this is your place.Top stop of my trip so far.read more

Great food and EVEN better service ! I tried the in-between brisket, pork spareribs and jalapeno cheese link, along with potato salad, pinto beans and fresh banana pudding. Can't remember the last time I had banana pudding with the coolies crispy and not soggy from sitting around all day. Kudo's to... the staff for putting the cookies in just before being served. Flavor of the brisket was fantastic.Being cooped up with Covid this year it was great to receive the customer service provided by Cindy and Esmeralda. They made my day! Will definitely go back to this 1935 Houston establishment with so much history.read more

A great, locally owned, pit BBQ restaurant. I usually get a brisket sandwich with pinto beans and tater salad. Always perfect. I have also had their beef ribs and turkey. Both smokey and perfect. The staff is super friendly and there is plenty of parking.

Great BBQ Ribs and sides. Felt rushed after receiving our food. Waitress almost picked up my plate even when I was still eating my food but I think maybe she was just ready to go home but we were not the only people in the place. Well worth trying again.

This is absolutely the best BBQ I have eaten in Houston! by far!!!! I eat BBQ almost every week, and there are some pretty good places. The problem with most of them is they have to over season the meat to make up for not knowing how to cook the meat. Yeah it taste ok, but this places knows how to... COOK the meat. I’m blown away! Highly recommend it!read more

I came here from New Orleans with my employer and his wife. He currently has brain cancer and was very sick for three weeks. It was touch and go. This is important because when he started talking again all he could say was John’s Barbecue. After a week he explained more and we found out about John... and Lela Davis, Shepherd Drive Barbecue Stand, the history, how it changed hands and is now Pizztola’s. Of course I ordered a rack of ribs immediately and y’all made him the happiest man alive!! They were everything he remembered and then some. Pizztola’s has carried on the tradition built by the Davis family with excellence. That is not an easy feat with barbecue. Thank you so much for making the meal he has wanted for months extraordinary. We will be back in a few days.read more
